Press Kit – Blue Vessels EP

Who are you and what do you play?
I’m Stephen Caulfield from Reading in the UK. I primarily play keyboards, guitar and bass as well as programming and singing. I also handle all recording and production.

How and where did you start making music?
I’ve been making music for as long as I can remember. I taught myself guitar and piano and have always been singing. Things really kicked off for me though when I learning how to make music using technology and how is can be a tool just as useful as a guitar or piano.

Who are your main influences?
I love a great deal of music, but for my most recent releases I have been inspired by Bon Iver, The Blue Nile, Peter Gabriel, Phoebe Bridgers, M83, Jóhann Jóhannsson, Ólafur Arnalds, Sigur Rós, A Winged Victory for the Sullen, Björk, Tears For Fears, Kate Bush, Kiasmos, Brian Eno, Jon Hopkins, Talk Talk

Have you have any notable appearances?
I’ve been played multiple times on Tom Robinson’s show on BBC 6 Music, BBC Radio 3, BBC Sounds as well as BBC Introducing.

What have you released so far in your career to date?
Over the years I have released 5 full-length albums, 3 film soundtracks and several singles, as well as collaborating and producing albums for other people.

Where was the new EP Blue Vessels recorded and who was involved in its production?
The EP is performed, recorded and produced by myself in my studio, Parkview. I used a variety of instruments and sound sources in the EP including piano, synths, stringg, toys and lots of found sounds and field recordings.

How is the EP structured?
The Blue Vessels EP is the first part of a double album project that I am releasing across four EPs over the next year or so. The album will follow a drop of water as it makes its way from being frozen on a glacier all the way down to the depths of the ocean.

The Blue Vessels EP tells the first part of the story, following the ice melting and the water making its way over and under the glacier until it escapes onto the land.

What is the song Meltwater about?
Meltwater – A vast glacier stretches out across the top of a volcano, snow-capped and frozen. In the ablation zone the blue ice waits, gradually warming up in the warmth of the sun and the heat rising from beneath. Eventually a drop of water is freed from the ice and starts to inch down the glacier.

Do you have any photos of your travels in Iceland that helped inspired you rmusic for the EP?
I certainly do! I love travelling around Iceland and have taken a great amount of inspiration (and photos!) from the wonderful things I have seen there. Here are a few photos that were part of the inspiration the the music on the Blue Vessels EP.

When is the EP released and what’s next?
The Blue Vessels EP was released in October 2024. It will be followed by three more EPs over the next year or so that will carry on the story of the water’s journey all the way down the the heart of the ocean.
