Who are you and what do you play?
I’m Stephen Caulfield from Reading in the UK. I primarily play keyboards, guitar and bass as well as programming and singing. I also handle all recording and production.


How and where did you start making music?
I’ve been making music for as long as I can remember. I taught myself guitar and piano and have always been singing. Things really kicked off for me though when I learning how to make music using technology and how is can be a tool just as useful as a guitar or piano.


Who are your main influences?
I love a great deal of music, but for my most recent releases I have been inspired by Bon Iver, The Blue Nile, S. Carey, Peter Gabriel, Phoebe Bridgers, M83, Mitski, Jóhann Jóhannsson, Ólafur Arnalds, Sigur Rós, A Winged Victory for the Sullen, Björk, Tears For Fears, Kate Bush, Kiasmos, The 1975, Brian Eno, Jon Hopkins, Talk Talk


Have you have any notable appearances?
I’ve been played multiple times on Tom Robinson’s show on BBC 6 Music as well as BBC Introducing.


What have you released so far in your career to date?
Over the years I have released 5 full-length albums and 3 film soundtracks as well as collaborating and producing albums for other people.


Where was the new single Beacon Hill recorded and who was involved in its production?
The single Beacon Hill was performed, recorded and produced by myself in my studio, Parkview. The song was initially written over 10 years ago and it has been added to piece by piece over the years until I finally decided it was finished.


How is the song structured?
Beacon Hill starts softly with acoustic piano and guitar, then it adds more instrumentation such as electric guitar, drums and synthesisers as it builds, before ending with cut up and manipulated audio and samples as the instrumentation fades away.


What is the song about?
Beacon Hill is a song about a relationship between two lovers across a battlefield at night and their attempts to communicate and keep the other safe from harm, but there is unease and betrayal in the air.


When is the song released and what’s next?
Beacon Hill is my second single this year is released in August 2022. It is taken from my upcoming sixth album, Signal Fire. The first song from the album, The Night Came For You was release in May 2022.
