Joe Dooley – Taller Than Stories

By Stephen Caulfield Aug 15, 2010 / Leave a comment

I received something very nice in the post the other day. For the past couple of years I have been working with my uncle Joe Dooley on an album of his songs. They are performed by just Joe with his guitars and produced and mixed by me. Joe had written a number of story songs… Continue Reading

To the Lighthouse, from the album To the Lighthouse. Filmed all over the beautiful country of Iceland. Iceland really does have a lot of lighthouses and I have visited a lot of them. My wife has a rather snazzy collection of T-shirts featuring 1st edition book covers. As we toured Iceland I became quite enamoured with her T-shirt of Virginia Woolf’s book, To the Lighthouse. The more I thought about the book, lighthouses and what they symbolise - their purpose, location, history and events they have witnessed - the more the concept for this piece of music and the album as a whole came together. In Winter, I Collapse - from the album To the Lighthouse. Filmed all over the beautiful country of Iceland. People sometimes assume that Iceland is covered in snow and ice all year, but this isn’t the case for most of the year. When the winter does come though, the snow and ice come in abundance and it’s cold and dark for a lot of the time. However when the sun does rise, the long shadows mingling with the the warmest of golden yellow light on crisp white snow is truly beautiful. For full song and video, check the link in my bio. "I appreciate your concern. None of this is your fault. It’s me. It’s me and my head. In winter, I collapse." Virginia Woolf - Letter to Violet Dickinson, January 1909 #musicvideo #newsong #song #video #musicproducer #musicvideos #musician #instamusic #listentothis #goodmusic #iceland #icelandtravel #landscape #icelandvideo #icelandscape #tothelighthouse #videogram #Instrumental #ambientmusic #ambient #chillout #synthmusic #synth #soundscape #blacksandbeach #vik #waterfall #snow #ice #virginiawoolf 🇮🇸
Everything Is Remembered, from the album To the Lighthouse. Filmed on Kirkjufjara Beach, Vik, South Iceland. I find watching the waves wash on and off the black sand beach very hypnotic and you can easily get lost in your thoughts and memories - which suits this song very well. The instrumentation on this song is essentially a love letter to one of my all time favourite instruments, the Suzuki Omnichord OM-84. I’ve recorded it live and sequenced, as well as sampling it and doing all sorts of audio mangling. Morning Frost, from the album To the Lighthouse. Filmed all over the beautiful country of Iceland. In the morning when the sun rises and the darkness retreats the ice from the morning frost has often staked its claim to the land, albeit usually temporarily. Led Through the Woods By the Hand, from the album To the Lighthouse. Filmed in Dimmuborgir and Hljóðaklettar in the beautiful country of Iceland. Being lost, being found and being guided through strange, peculiar and sometimes frightening landscapes and places. The narrative of the music is specifically influenced by a dream of Agent Dale Cooper leading Laura Palmer through the woods in Twin Peaks. For full song and video, check the link in my bio. 🇮🇸
Field of View, from the album To the Lighthouse. Filmed all over the beautiful country of Iceland. Someone once told me that that Icelanders say, ‘You see the land’ in Iceland because there aren’t all that many trees, and so you can always see the landscapes wherever you are. For full song and video, check the link in my bio.
The Hallway, from the album To the Lighthouse. Filmed all over the beautiful country of Iceland. One of the main reasons I first wanted to visit Iceland was because of all the volcanic and geothermal activity. Over the years I’ve been lucky enough to visit lots of stunning locations all over the country and seen it first hand. It’s a real reminder of the power and beauty of nature and the planet that we all live on. For full song and video, check the link in my bio.
There's a Storm Coming In, from the album To the Lighthouse. Filmed all over the beautiful country of Iceland. In Iceland the weather can change very quickly and can go from beautiful sunshine to a rainstorm and back again in a matter of minutes. There is a saying in Iceland, ‘If you don’t like the weather, just wait five minutes!’ and I feel I fully understand that now. There is otherworldly feeling hanging in the air before the storm comes and the sky starts to darken that gives a very ethereal atmosphere. For full song and video, check the link in my bio.
